Brief description of your activity focus
E&E co-ordinates research in the area of education using ethnographic methodology

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
Ethnography and Education is an international network that develops an ethnographic perspective and methodology in education. We edit a journal, an international email list, a book series and hold an annual conference. We illuminate educational practices through empirical methodologies which prioritise the experiences and perspectives of those involved. We are particularly open to sociological perspectives and general educational studies as well as anthropology. Our priority is to support ethnographic research that involves long-term engagement with those studied in order to understand their cultures, to use multiple methods of generating data and to recognise the centrality of the researcher in the research process.
ConferencesWe organise one major annual conference in Oxford with over 70 delegates at New College and it has a turnover of approximately £12,000 with a surplus remaining of about 15% which assists other annual activities. We are organising another conference in the Spring of 2011 in Porto and intend to organise at least two conferences a year for the next three years with an approximate turnover of about £15,000.
Publishing
Routledge (Taylor and Francis) publish a journal which we edit and we receive approximately £2000 for expenses to promote the journal. Our responsibilities are to invite publications, process them, arrange for peer review and deliver manuscripts to the publisher three times a year.
We also edit a book series publishing at least 2 books a year and at present this is with Tufnell Press but we may change to another company in the near future. We regularly purchase back some of these books at a discounted price for distribution via our conferences and other network outlets.
We publish shorter book via our publishing title E&E Publishing
Networking
We currently use a free network service from Jiscmail which includes a website and facilities for processing our conferences and email lists. We also administer our main website www.ethnographyandeducation.org which needs funds to maintain it through commissioning.
