Roger Torrenti graduated in 1976 from Ecole Centrale de Paris, in the top 3 of the French engineers’
“grandes écoles.
He began his career as a research engineer at the French Atomic Energy Commission, where he
developed an expertise in energy technologies and also had the opportunity to be involved in
international working groups, within IEA (International Energy Agency) and European Commission (EC)
projects. In 1979, he was given the management of a research centre of Armines, an institution linked to
the French Ministry for Industry. There, Roger developed his expertise in the energy and IT fields and his
international experience. In 1984, Roger founded (and has been managing since then) Sigma Orionis
(http://www.sigma-orionis.com) a technology and market research organization based in the Sophia
Antipolis science park (http://www.sophia-antipolis.org), often called the European Silicon Valley and
located close to Nice international airport, in South-East of France. Sigma Orionis specializes in
Information and Communication Technologies with a focus on Science and Technology, and is mainly
involved in international projects, providing research laboratories, companies, and institutions active in
the ICT domain worldwide with services such as technology assessment, market analysis, organization of
business and cooperation events, secretariat of associations and working groups. Roger has been involved
in the last 15-20 years in a lot of EU-funded projects and is in particular the coordinator of the ongoing
RRI-ICT Forum project (www.rri-ict.eu), aiming at analysing, supporting and promoting the contribution of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) to, and the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) approach in ICT research and innovation under H2020. Roger represents his organization in several European
instances, namely at the Steering Board or Executive Group of European Technology Platforms. He is
often invited by national and international institutions to participate in evaluation and review exercises.
He has been namely acting since 1990 as an evaluator and reviewer of EU-funded projects and
programmes. His passions include languages (he has learned 11 of them), mountaineering, philosophy,
photography, modern art, and basketball. Roger was born in Nice, France, in 1953.
