The Foundation for Social Welfare Services is a public, umbrella organisation providing a wide spectrum of social welfare services through three national agencies. These are:
• Aġenzija Appoġġ - the national agency providing social welfare services for children, family and the community. Through its qualified professionals, Aġenzija Appoġġ offers more than 28 social services, in the field of child abuse, domestic violence, youth with behavioural difficulties and children in care, amongst others. Appoġġ also runs the national 24-hour free phone helpline Supportline 179.
• Aġenzija Sedqa - the national agency working with persons experiencing addiction problems. This agency offers information, prevention programmes, community and residential treatment and rehabilitation services to persons with drug, alcohol, and/or gambling problems, and to their families and significant others.
• Aġenzija Sapport - the national agency providing social work and support to persons with disability and their care givers. Sapport works with persons with a disability and their families to secure the means, opportunities and services whereby they can execute their right to fully participate in community life. The Day Centres for Persons with a Disability, which are run by Aġenzija Sapport, help persons with a disability to continue developing their potential through different types of activities.
These are the main national agencies operating in the fields of social welfare services in Malta, The Foundation for Social Welfare Services has over 700 employees providing these services.
The organization operates through a multidisciplinary team of experts and staff specialised in social service provision targeted at children, families and the community at large; persons with problems of addictions & substance abuse, as well as persons with disabilities.
The Foundation for Social Welfare Services is affiliated to Eurochild, Homestart International, Insafe (European network of awareness centres), Inhope (International Association of Internet Hotlines), BASPCAN (British Association for the Study and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect), FESAT (European Foundation of Drug Helplines) and Child Helpline International.

International and national projects beyond EU Framework Programme
The Research Department at the Foundation for Social Welfare Services is engaged in the collection, collation, analysis and reporting of data from service users from the Aġenzija Appoġġ, Aġenzija Sedqa and Aġenzija Sapport. It has conducted qualitative reviews and evaluations of programmes and services offered by these three agencies. The Foundation contributes regularly towards the development of national documents which underpin social policy in Malta. It also contributes towards national reports presented at EU level, insofar as social welfare services are concerned. Furthermore, the Research Department has collaborated with the EMCDDA (European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction) in terms of drug-related data. It is also involved in a number of national and international research projects, such as the European School Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) and a study on alcohol, tobacco and drug use amongst students in post-secondary and tertiary education.
