Brief description of your activity focus
Economic, political and social change in Central Africa

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
Benjamin Rubbers received his PhD. thesis at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. For ten years his research deals with the recent economic and social changes affecting the industrial province of Katanga, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. After having studied the urban-rural connection and the career of young medical doctors, he carried out his doctoral research on the White minority in this region. The publication resulting from this research focuses on the racial insularity of this community, on its economic role, and on its relationship to the State. In 2006 Benjamin Rubbers began a new fieldwork among the workers of the Gécamines who were fired with the support of the World Bank in 2003. More recently, he also received a grant to study the reform of the justice of proximity in Katanga. This research will consist in comparing the judicial process in customary courts and in courts of peace. Generally speaking Benjamin Rubbers is interested by topics at the crossroads between anthropology and sociology such as trust, professional identities, racism, trade networks, corruption, local politics, and domesticity.
