Joe Costanzo is a doctoral student in both Urban Studies and Planning (University of Maryland, USA) and Sciences politiques et sociales (Université de Liège, Belgium). A Visiting Researcher at the Center for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM-ULg), his thesis research in Belgium focuses on immigrant and ethnic participation in cultural events—Brussels’ Zinneke Parade 2010 in particular—exploring the role of cultural participation in immigrant integration.
His broader interests include: the role of social science in public policy, the research process from design to analysis and dissemination, collective movements, participatory governance, urban identities and spaces and designing research to study difficult populations (illegal migrants) and events (protests and parades). He has developed and taught a graduate research methods course on measuring community at Maryland.
Prior experience includes being a social science analyst for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service and an immigration specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau. For the U.S. government he worked on issues of human trafficking, redesigning the U.S. Naturalization Test, immigrant integration and illegal migration. Joe holds a Masters Degree in Applied Demography (Georgetown University, 1998) and a Bachelors Degree in Political Science (Pennsylvania State University, 1993).
