Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
The Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) was established in 2000 by the
Minister for Education and Science in response to the need to develop Irelands research capacity and
skills base in a rapidly-changing global environment where knowledge is key to economic and social
growth. The IRCHSS funds leading-edge research in the humanities and social sciences, including law
and business studies. The primary strategic objective of the IRCHSS centres on building an expertise-
driven research system to enhance Irelands innovation capacity and skills base in a rapidly-changing
global environment where knowledge is key to economic, social and cultural development.

The IRCHSS is further committed to facilitating the integration of Irish researchers in the humanities
and social sciences within the European Research Area. IRCHSS acts as National Delegate (ND) and the
National Contact Point (NCP) for the theme 8 of the Cooperation Programme and for the European
Research Council (ERC) covering the domains of socio-economic sciences and humanities. Mr Tim
Conlon (Interim Director of the IRCHSS) is the National Delegate and Ms Sorcha Carthy (IRCHSS
European Projects Officer) is the NCP. Through its membership of the European Science Foundation,
the Research Council is committed to integrating Irish research in European and international networks
of expertise. The IRCHSS actively liaises with the European Commission on the Framework Programmes
7 and other EU research councils on areas of mutual interest.

The Research Council operates a suite of inter-linked research schemes. In 2011 funding will be
allocated under open calls in four of such schemes. The IRCHSS Government of Ireland Post-Graduate
Scholarships and Government of Ireland Post-Doctoral Fellowships which fund research at pre- and post-
doctoral levels, the Research Development Initiative Scheme which facilitates researchers and research
teams to expand their activities into new research areas by way of stimulus project grants and
knowledge transfer initiativesand the Government of Ireland Research Fellowship Projects Grants which
funds world-class innovative research undertaken on an extended or group project basis.
In the past, the Research Council also operated other schemes such as the Government of Ireland
Research Fellowships and the Government of Ireland Senior Research Fellowship, which offered research
opportunities for members of the academic staff of recognised third-level institutions to undertake
stated projects.
