Early childhood development; mental health promotion and prevention; risk and resilience including substance use among adolescents

 Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
Prof Bhana is a registered Clinical Psychologist with expertise in areas of risk and resilience among youth
including substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and family-based interventions. Public mental health promotion through evidence-based interventions focusing on integrating mental health into primary health care. Social and emotional learning (SEL) as a primary intervention with school-going children in low resource settings. His publication record spans the authoring and co-authoring of over 50 published papers and book chapters, 45 research reports and over a 100 conference papers, including co-authoring two books. Recent publications focus on family protective factors in reducing risk for children and youth at risk, including for youth who are HIV positive and the role of gender in risk-taking behaviour, public mental health interventions and policy in developing country contexts, and alcohol and drug abuse trends.

 International and national projects beyond EU Framework Programme
Prof Bhana is a member of a number of South African and international professional organisations, and serves
as an associate editor and reviewer of various scholarly journals. He has also been invited to serve on the
International Advisory Board of the journal Critical Public Health. Currently, he serves on the Global Advisory
Group on HIV and Sex Education (UNESCO), the World Federation of Mental Health Experts Panel on Mental
Health, is a member of the Scientific Committee of the 2011 World Mental Health Congress and is chairperson
of the Scientific Committee for the Clinical Psychology Division of the 30th International Congress of
Psychology (ICP) to be held in 2012. He is an associate member of the Alcohol and Drug Use Research Unit
(ADARU) at MRC, and serves on the Advisory Board of Emthonjeni Community Centre of the Wits University,
School of Human & Community Development. He has also been a co-PI on two R01 randomised control trials
funded by the NIH.
