Ege University, is a 52 year old University having a 50.000 capacity campus site. It put a special emphasis on initiation of projects embracing various segments of the society and to improve collaborations and flows of information exchange between the university and the society. It is also within the European Accreditation System and is a full member of the Socrates / Erasmus Programme. It is the best performing university in the country in total mobility actions. Ege University is currently composed of 11 Faculties, 5 Schools, 7 Vocational Schools, a State Conservatoire of Turkish Music, 8 Institutes, 6 Departments in special status and 26 Research and Application Centres. In 2008-2009 academic year, 11.641 associate, 27.114 undergraduate, 2.052 graduate, 467 specialists of Medicine and 1575 doctorate students, in total 42.849 students,are enrolled in Ege University. There are 3.284 teaching staff and 3.500 administrative staff in the University. http://www.ege.edu.tr .
Historically, since its establishment, Ege University has played a leadership role in the region and has been a pioneering Institution in the Region with respect to its many socially oriented services. Its Botanical Gardens established in 1962 and presently the largest in the country, its Natural History Museum, established in 1966 and still the only one in the country and its observatory established in 1964, are also special units that provide services to the general public while setting examples to other Higher Education Institutes in the country with their pioneering work.
The initial steps for the first Cultural Centre in Izmir, which was then the largest in the region were taken through the efforts of the University Administration in 1971.
Today, it has a number of practices which are completely innovative and unique in Turkey, such as its industrial relations, approach to EU projects, special programmes for students, etc. It puts a Special Focus on University – Society Relations and emphasizes activities that contribute to the socio-economic development of the Society and the Region. It has good relations with all stakeholders, has an approachable and respected image in the region. The social and cultural activities in Ege University are conducted at university, faculty and school levels. Various art exhibitions and activities are organized for the enjoyment of the students at their leisure times.
In 2001 it has established Ege Continuous Education Centre (EGESEM) to provide courses in continuous education. The Centre cooperates with professional organizations, employers and other stakeholders in developing LLL Programmes. It tries to respond to their foreseen needs as well as providing assistance upon request. In 2003 Ege University initiated a Social Responsibility Programme in cooperation with Sabancı University. In addition, another project titled “The Community University Project” reflecting the mission of the Project itself was started in 2004.
The other social responsibility project participated in with civil society institutions is “Local Agenda 21” (YG21) initiated by the Metropolitan city and voluntary groups aiming at producing solutions to urban problems. Ege University Gender Issues Research Centre (EKAM), carries out activities for improving socio-economic conditions of women. It is the policy of the University to contribute in the protecting the cultural heritage of İzmir. Thus, the University has restored old historical Mansions located in Bornova.
The University also has close ties with other national and regional organisations and industry through the Science and Technology Centre (EBİLTEM) providing an effective interface between industry and university, with the support of Ege University’s infrastructure and expert manpower. The organizations of a Science Fair in 2003 from which 100,000 school children benefited and European Researchers’ Night activities ( are other examples of its wide-spread services to increase the interest of the general public and more specifically the young generation to science and research. EBILTEM has also successfully organized the “first and only” European Researchers’ Night 2006 with the participation of 2000 people in Turkey; the second European Researchers’ Night 2007 with the participation of nearly 3000 people; the third European Researchers’ Night 2008 with the participation of approximately10.500 people. It has also organized so far numerous activities targeting at various actors of the society, promoting awareness of science and technology, such as, Science Fair for School Students (06-19 Jan. 2003), Research Project Competition for secondary school students (19-22 Apr. 2005), “Fractal World “ Exhibition for University students (10 Apr.-2 May 2003), R&D Brokerage Events (six events since 2002). Ege University Student Clubs are designed to encourage students activities in cultural and social organizations. The campaigns and social responsibility projects aiming to satisfy social needs of the society and provide participation for such activities are planned in collaboration with various institutions and organizations.

International and national projects beyond EU Framework Programme
The EU Programmes Coordination Office is active since October 2002 and performs its tasks in coordination with the FP6 National Coordination Office within the structure of TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey). The Office contributes to efficient participation to the Programme via disseminating information coming from the National Contact Points to the relevant institutions and persons. Ege University Mobility Centre which is one of the six Centres in Turkey, is part of the EURAXESS Network, assisting experts involved in in-ward or out-ward Mobility activities serving 14 provinces in the Region.
