Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
I completed my professional training as an educational psychologist in the UK and subsequently completed a doctorate in early literacy development and how early skills contribute to later reading and spelling abilities. The research included use of statistical techniques including factor and regression analysis.
I have considerable experience in the use of restricted educational psychological test material as I have maintained a healthy interest in the practice of educational psychology at many different levels (early school, middle school, senior school and post 16 education) mainly working with students with learning difficulties.
For the past 12 years, my main employment has been that of a lecturer in a faculty of education and I regularly coordinate and lecture courses in educational psychology and literacy to teachers in training and teachers following master level courses. One particular course I co-ordinated and ran recently, was a BDA approved training programme for teachers of learners with dyslexia.
In 2009-2010 I acted as project coordinator in the compilation and standardization of 2 literacy measures (reading comprehension in English and Maltese) on samples exceeding 2000 Maltese students between the ages of 6 and 16 years. I have also contributed to the PIRLS process and have attended for one of the preparatory sessions held in Amsterdam in 2009.
I am keen to be involved in similar studies and projects on literacy (such as I have been involved in already) and can contribute some of my experience. I would be particularly interested in international, comparative studies in the areas indicated above. I would also be interested in contributing to the setting up of common study units and courses run as part of cooperative initiatives between different universities or institutes in the areas of educational psychology, literacy and assessment.
