ILS is established in 1947 to carry out fundamental and applied research in the field of law, consultancy and training.

 Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
The research staff of the Institute covers 12 specialties as follows: Constitutional Law, Civil, Family and
Succession Law, Commercial Law, Patent Law, Administrative Law and Administrative Procedure, Labour
and Social Security Law, Penal Law, Civil Procedure and Penal Procedure Law, International Law and
International Relations, International Private Law, Environmental Law and Sociology of Law.

Almost each one of the fellows has provided legal expertise in drafting of the new legislation either as a
member of expert’s group (amendments to the Constitution, Administrative Procedure Code, Penal
Procedure Code, Family Code) or as a consultant (to the Council of Ministers, Ministries of Justice,
Foreign Affairs etc.) Impressive is the volume of expert work provided by the scholars of the Institute. For
instance, more than 274 expert opinions, including opinions for international organizations and
institutions (UNIDROIT and the European Space Agency), draft laws and others. Support to the
implementation of legislation has been provided by many publications that analyse and comment the
major new pieces of legislation.

Expertise is secured on demand from the Supreme Court of Cassation and Supreme Administrative Courts.
The expert opinion in these cases contributes in issuing of Interpreting Decisions of the Courts that
serve as guiding principles for the courts of lower instances.

ILS has been traditionally attracting the interest of many PHD students. Over the last 7 years more than
60 doctoral candidates received training in the ILS.

ILS maintains a library that comprises 34,187 titles (20,586 out of them are books and 13,601 – periodicals).

Two of the fellows have been awarded Fulbright Scholarship.
ILS participated in the Sixt EU Framework programme (2004-2007) as a consortium partner.
