Utopian thought and movements, history of the future, and State-building processes in Spain and Latin America

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
Modern History Professor. Leading Researcher of the HISTOPIA Research Group, the National Spanish R&D project History of the future: utopia and its alternatives in the modern horizons of expectation (19th-21th centuries) and the Transatlantic Network for the Study of Utopias. The HISTOPIA group studies both the discursive side of utopias (texts reflecting utopian or dystopian thought) and their active dimension (utopian-inspired experimental communities and social movements) in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. It focuses on Spain, but has comparative and transnational aims towards Europe and America. We work with documentary sources about topics such as: urban and architectural utopias; utopian socialism and the origins of the worker’s movement; the specific utopias of political and social movements (anarchists, Fourierists, Cabetians, liberals, republicans, federalists, Europeists…); the anti-communist and counter-revolutionary dystopias of the 20th Century; the manifestation of utopia in such fields as art, theatre, music, literature and science-fiction films; experimental communities in Europe and America; utopian thought and its relation with the new social movements; attempts to scientifically predict future scenarios, etc.
