Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
I am Professor of Communication and Media at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. My research interests are
focused on gendered use of the media, whether that is contemporary or historical. In particular I have researched
men and women’s blogging; parents’ use of Mumsnet and mobile phone apps; teen boys’ behaviour online; and women
politicians and Twitter. I was recently a Visiting Fellow at the University of Canberra, Australia, investigating digital
parenting. On the other hand, I also work on the subject of Scottish women’s history, particularly in the early 20th
century, and am currently working on a book, to be published by Palgrave Macmillan next year, on the Scottish Press
and the Suffragettes. I am a member of Women’s History Scotland and have spoken at the Edinburgh History Festival,
Techfest Science Festival and the Aberdeen Word Festival. I have good experience as a media commentator and
contributor, in print, broadcast and online. I originally worked in publishing. Both my research and teaching are
informed by an interest in feminist theory and politics.
