Brief description of your activity focus
Urban change, urban identity, city marketing, creativity and urban policy, post-socialist areas

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
My research focuses on urban change, particularly city marketing and urban imaging and identity. More recently I have been working on urban policy and the creative city and urban cosmopolitanism. I am also interested in the heritage of state-socialism and how it interacts with urban identity today. I work in both the post-socialist context (mainly East and Central Europe) and in various advanced capitalist contexts (UK and Sweden). I have expertise in urban policy and qualitative research methods.
 Research Activities

International and national projects beyond EU Framework Programme
The HUGGIS group conducts research with partners in the UK, Europe, North America, Russia and China. There is a strong geographical focus on research into the contemporary and historical geographies of Manchester and the North West of England. A second key focus is East and Central Europe with a number of ongoing projects on the contemporary social and cultural geographies of post-2004 accession states. A third key focus is China with a focus on modelling and analysing urban growth patterns using GIS. Another key GIS research area is spatial data modelling and map generalisation. The focus of this research is to develop technqiues for modelling and representing geographic phenomena at different levels of detail.
