Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
The International Center Early Childhood Education and Care (ICEC) was founded at the German Youth Institute
(DJI) in 2012. The ICEC fosters the international exchange of experience and knowledge in the fields of science
and politics and supports the work of the German federal government in international bodies and networks on
the topics of early childhood education and care.
Quality initiatives and system reforms in the field of early childhood education and care are being promoted
both in Germany and in many other countries within Europe and elsewhere. While the conditions and goals in
individual countries differ, international cooperation and knowledge sharing can provide vital impetus for the
development and advancement of early childhood education and care systems. Germany has adopted an
approach of international cooperation and participates in international bodies and networks on early childhood
education and care.
Against the backdrop of current developments and challenges, the ICEC supports the international transfer of
knowledge, political concepts and experiences and adapts findings from other countries for use in Germany. The
ICEC monitors international developments and is actively involved in shaping them, focusing experience and
research findings and identifying areas of good practice. By looking beyond Germanys borders, the ICEC aims to
contribute to the advancement of the German early childhood education and care system in terms of both
quality and quantity.
The ICEC acts as a link between national and international stakeholders that address issues of early childhood
education and care from scientific, practical or political perspectives.
