Fun, Educational and Meaningful Writing: Development of a Universal Digital Pedagogy and Writing Tool

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
Every fifth student leaves school without the necessary writing skills needed to function normally in
today´s knowledge society. The most common digital writing tools focus on productivity, but they
neither teach nor motivate students to write. Teachers don´t master the situation either. The
individual needs of a large number of students is oftentimes overwhelming, and teachers must
regularly simplify and standardize the teaching, while students with writing difficulties lose out.
In this project, we address the problems above by radically improving writing tools, writing pedagogy
and writing skills in school. We make students´ writing more fun, educational and meaningful. We
accomplish these goals by
- developing a digital writing tool, which automatically adapts the challenges and scaffolding to each
individual student,
- paying particular attention to the needs of students with writing difficulties and dyslexia,
- providing teachers and students with new pedagogical possibilities -- we create a universal digital
pedagogy -- such that all students can participate and learn on their own terms in the same
classroom.
The project brings together need owners in the form of students, teachers, schools and disability
associations, whose needs are met by innovative entrepreneurs, which are supported by experts in
the fields of writing disabilities, genre pedagogy and language technology.
The EU High Level Group of Experts on Literacy ascertains that improved literacy among the EU
citizens leads to billions of Euros in societal benefits, as well as a more democratic and inclusive
society. To realize those benefits we need well-targeted investments like this project.
