Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
My main interest is in the relationships between education and democracy, both with regard to school education, post-secondary education, vocational education and higher educaiton and with regard to adult education and lifelong learning. This involves questions of democratic education, citizenship education, and democratic and civic learning in formal and non-formal educational settings. I have conducted large scale empirical projects on learning through the lifecourse and on the formation and transformation of learning cultures in educational settings. I also have a strong interest in and expertise in educational theory and in the theory and philosophy of educational research.
In 2011 I held the International Francqui Professorship at the University of Ghent, Belgium, in the domain of civic learning.
