Political communication; journalism studies/history; former political journalism/editor

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
I have worked in DCU since September 2010 - lecturing in political communication and journalism - and as
chairperson of the MA in Political Communication. In September 2012 I was appointed Associate Dean for
Research in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. I have written and published widely on media
and politics in Ireland. Current research projects include studies of media coverage of elections and
parliament in Ireland, political advertising in Ireland and a biographical profile of foreign correspondent,
E.J. Dillon. I am also the Irish contact for the international Worlds of Journalism project. Before moving
into an academic role in 2008 I worked as a political journalist and held several senior editorial positions
with Irish media organisations including The Irish Times (political reporter), The Sunday Times (political
correspondent), Sunday Tribune (political editor/assistant editor) and Magill magazine (editor). I also
worked with RTE as a correspondent on Prime Time and as a radio presenter in the RTE newsroom
primarily on the This Week programme but also as a substitute presenter on Morning Ireland and the News
at One. During this time I was mainly based in Leinster House but also covered the peace process in
Northern Ireland, elections in the United Kingdom and Germany as well as foreign news events in Malawi,
Tanzania, the Beslan School massacre and the death of Pope John Paul II. From 2008 to 2010 I was Head of
the Department of Film and Media at the National Film School, IADT Dun Laoghaire. A wider profile is
available on my LinkedIn page.
