Institute of Social sciences and Humanities is the unit of the Latvian University of Agriculture Faculty
of Economic and social development. Our academic team consists of 30 members.
Institute strengths :
1 ) 20 years’ experience international and national level research experience of different socio-
economic development issues in Latvia, especially of rural area.
2 ) Qualified multi-disciplinary specialists’ team. 14 team members have doctoral degree in different
branches of science (sociology, economics, social work, geography, philosophy, psychology).

International projects:
1) 2013 - Increased awareness of decent work for teachers

Project focused on enhancing understanding of teachers and decision makers at different levels of governance
and society in Latvia on decent work issues to provide increasing in number of collective agreements, to
improve collective agreements towards decent work conditions requirements. Team of Institute conducted
research on needs and expectations of education and science employees in terms of securing stability and decent
work conditions within the scope of collective agreement.

2) 2012-2013 „Equine industries promoting economically competitive and innovative regions”
Coordinator Rantamäki-Lahtinen Leena
Project focused on establishing a baseline definition and conceptualization of the horse industry of the Central-
Baltic region to promote novel customer-oriented equine services, especially in nature-based tourism and by
generating policy recommendations for the effective regulation of the industry’s competitive development in a
sustainable way.

3) 2012-2013 “ Senior, participate!”
Coordinator Aina Verze
Project focused on the reduction of social stratification and inequality for pensioners and elderly, providing legal
education about their rights, by developing policy recommendations.

1) 2010-2012 “Promoting Entrepreneurship in the Latvian countryside: the economic and social conditions

Research focused on the social and economic conditions, that enable the development of business in the Latvian
countryside

2) 2009-2012 “Partnership models for promotion of rural women business”
Project focused on rural development of rural women entrepreneurship promotion through educational activities,
networking and micro-lending

3) 2009-2010 Family-friendly work environment in Latvia: business organizations vision
Research focused on the identification and evaluation of conditions of family-friendly working environment,
obstructive and facilitative factors, in order to promote development of family-friendly workplaces in Latvia labor
market. It is an important aspect within the context of social inclusion and sustainability of society.

4) 2008 Formation of small rural towns resource center
Coordinator: Jānis Ķusis
In the project was actualized polycentric territorial development idea, emphasizing the role of small towns in rural
development. In order to gather data on the Latvian small rural town, during the project was created a resource
center and a website

5) 2007 Strategies for small towns to become centers of employment and services
Coordinator: Jānis Ķusis
Regional development in small towns. This project investigated the financial, economic, demographic, social and
political tools which determine the strategic directions of development of small towns. It was clarified the
existence of a development strategy in small towns and evaluates alternatives

Over the past 5 years, there are seven doctoral thesis on different socio-economic and cultural development
issues defended:

Anda Grīnfelde Pensioners quality of life in Latvian regions (2010)

Ženija Krūzmētra : A suburban rural population change in Latvian . (2011)

Viola Korpa: Work and family life private sector organizations . (2012).
PhD Thesis presents an analysis of work-family reconciliation in Latvia in relation to forming of family-friendly
workplaces while assessing the experience, practices and possibilities of the organizations of private sector in the
creation of family-friendly work environment. The results are published in a monograph V.Korpa „Work-Family
Reconciliation in the Organizations of Private Sector”. Published PhD Thesis. Riga: The University of Latvia,
2012. 190 p. ISBN 978-9984-48-069-5 (in Latvian).

Juris Vugulis “Ideas of Orthodoxy and Hesychasm in Latvia 1836 - 1934”
Research area: cultural heritage
Interaction of religions, philosophical ideas and cultures. Foundation of particular and small subcultures or
religious branches and methodological peculiarities of their research. The essence and correlation of the
theological-philosophical ideas of Orthodoxy and hesychasm in the tradition of Byzantium and Russian Orthodoxy,
and the obtained regularities are used to study the presence of these ideas in the territory of Latvia (the
provinces of Liflyandiya and Vitebsk of the Russian Empire until 1918) and in Latvia until 1934.
