Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
I use qualitative research methods, in particular Grounded Theory and Narrative Analysis to approach
questions about how people experience the world around them in terms of their health and well being. I am
interested in strategies for self regulation, in particular how engagement with the arts functions as a
mood enhancer and/or reflector of mood state.
I have directed projects studying the use of music in healthcare settings, historically and in modern times.
I have theorised how the therapeutic value of the arts has been appropriated to support arts policies and
practices moving the State away from a responsibility to foster and support diverse cultural practices
towards the arts being reduced and instrumentalised as actions to primarily enhance health and well being.
