Academic and policy-oriented research on environmental policy, sustainable development and societal transitions
Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
HIVA-KU Leuven has a multidisciplinary staff. Our top priorities are scientific quality and social relevance. We conduct high-quality, innovative academic and policy-related research that works for people and society. We translate our research findings into policy advice and training initiatives such as seminars, conferences and workshops. HIVA participates in numerous international academic networks.
The research team on environmental policy and sustainable development focuses on: sustainable development (sustainability transitions and transition policy, wellbeing and sustainable development, governance for sustainable development), economic and financial instruments (environmental taxes and subsidies, environmentally harmful subsidies, funding transitions), environmental policy evaluation (ex ante and ex post evaluations, effectiveness and side effects of environmental policy), adaptation to climate change (social and economic impacts of floods) and global environmental governance (Chinese climate and energy policies, EU-Asia relations, resource governance and sustainable materials management).
Sander Happaerts is research manager and part-time lecturer. He coordinates the Flemish Policy Research Centre on Transitions for Sustainable Development (TRADO), a research consortium between KU Leuven, Ghent University, Erasmus University Rotterdam and VITO. Sander is also a member of the Flemish Policy Research Centre on Sustainable Materials Management (SuMMa), with a project on global and European governance of natural resources. His PhD (2011, KU Leuven, on governance for sustainable development) was awarded in the Thesis Competition of the EU Committee of the Regions.
