Project Title

Migration and language learning in migrants children

Description

We are looking for a consortium for the topic MIGRATION-05-2018-2020: Mapping and overcoming integration challenges for migrant children.
We would like to explore the early development of communication and linguistic competences in migrants (0-6 y.o.) and focus the connection between cultural identity, social conditions and their impact on emergent literacy and the possibility of intervention to enhance their language skills.
We can offer the following expertise:
1. Communication and language development:
• gesture and lexical development in monolingual/bilingual/multilingual toddlers and preschoolers;
• relationship between first-language and second-language acquisition;
• parent/teacher-child communicative and linguistic interaction;
• the role of quantity and quality of communicative and linguistic input of the caregivers (parents and teachers) in promoting infant communication and language development;
• home/daycare/preschool language and early literacy environment;
• late talkers and children with language impairment;
• language trajectories of children from low-income families;
• parent/teacher-based intervention programme to promote childrens language development.
2. Social competence:
• peer relationship in educational contexts;
• relationship between social skills and second-language acquisition;
• gender differences in social and language development.
3. Parenting and migration:
• socialization goals and parental ethnotheories;
• acculturation processes.
